Backyard Chickens
First of all, find out the reason why you want to raise backyard chickens. There are a lot of benefits by raising your own birds.

•	It is very easy to raise backyard chickens and surprisingly less expensive than other more common household pets.
•	Every morning you can wake up to having fresh and all organic eggs. Not to mention that they are a lot more nutritious and better tasting than the eggs you buy at the market. You will be saving a lot more money by having your own fresh eggs instead of paying the high price of organic eggs.
•	Backyard chickens can help you get rid of weeds that you have in your lawn. This chemecal free way will make your lawn weed free. Also chickens will reduce the number of bugs you have in the area.
•	If you have a green thumb, you can use chicken fertilizer for your gardening needs. It is the best fertilizer you can get and you do not ever have to pay for it.
•	Not many people know that chickens do have a personality and they are fun pets as well.

Before embarking on raising backyard chickens, your town may have some rules and regulations about having poultry as pets. The second thing you have to do is to check your local chicken ordinances and see if you are allowed to keep backyard chickens. After you are all cleared to have backyard chickens, you can set out to get some chicks.

Springtime is the best time to get chicks. Check your local feed store for chicks and you will usually find chicks that are only a day old. This is the easiest way to start raising backyard chickens. There are other options such as hatching chicks from eggs. If you are up for the challenge, you will need to have a chicken incubator that can easily be made at home. Or if you would like, you can even purchase chickens that are for sale.

// ]]>

For the first 60 days of raising your chicks, you can use a cardboard box that is sturdy enough or even a small animal cage like the ones they have for rabbits. For the floor the chicks’ temporary housing, cover it up with pine shavings. It is best to use pine shavings because it is free and best for the young chicks. Keep the temperature really warm. It needs to be between 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Every week that passes by, you can reduce the temperature by 5 degrees incrementally. To achieve this temperature, use a lamp with a 100-watt light bulb and point it in one corner. Keep a temperature scale inside to note how warm it is getting for the chicks.

Make sure to let the soon to be backyard chickens have enough play time and let them explore the outside world. Just be sure not to let them run away and keep an eye out for them because there may be predators nearby. Keep plenty of water available for the chicks and feed them chick crumbles.

After 60 days, they will start to get feathered out and then you will need to build a chicken coop. The general rule of thumb that works well is that each backyard chicken needs to have about 2 to 3 square feet inside the chicken coop. Luckily for you, we have plans and instructions on how to build chicken coops for your backyard chickens.

How To Make a Chicken Coop
Design Plans of Your Chicken Coop
Before choosing on a final design plan and before you make your chicken coop, you need to survey your backyard or where ever you plan on building the chicken coop. There are some things to consider such as how much sunlight the area gets, is it easily accessible to rodents and predators, and how close it is to a disposing place. There will be a lot of bird feces that you need to clean up along with some hay every now and then so be sure to keep the chicken coop in an area where you can get to easily. Also make sure that the chicken coop is placed in an area that gets plenty of sunshine along with air the flows easily in and out of the hen house. If you have any broken fences surrounding the chicken coop, you will need to fix that before you place your birds in the hen house. Pretty much you need to use sound judgment in the placement and design of the DIY chicken coop. One more piece of advice regarding the hen house is that is you need to think about the grass or weeds that you have in the surrounding area.

How To Make a Chicken Coop and Protect It From Predators
When you are learning how to make a chicken coop, one of the most important things is to keep it free from foxes or other predators that will feast on your birds. Use chicken wire to protect your birds and keep rodents from coming in. Also be sure to seal up small cracks where rats can go in and mess up your birds’ eggs and disturb your birds. Raccoons will be your worst enemy and they love to come out at night and dig underneath your hen house to get to your birds. It’s important to set up a perimeter around your chicken coop when you are making it.

Think About The Weather and Natural Resources when Making Your Chicken Coop
As mentioned earlier, your birds need proper ventilation but they also need to be protected by natural occurrences like rain. Having a rain soaked bird is the best way to spread diseases among them and get them sick. It’s really important to keep your birds safe and dry from the weather when you are making a chicken coop. Also your chicken feeders and watering systems need to be in immaculate condition at all times and needs to be close to your hen house, keep these in mind when you know how to make a chicken coop.

Let’s review some of the things you need to know when you know how to make a chicken coop.
•	Have enough room in and around your chicken coop.
•	Make sure your chicken coop gets enough sunlight and is safe from rain, hail, snow, and the cold.
•	Keep rodents and predators out of your hen house by setting up a perimeter around the chicken coop along with the whole property.
•	Your chicken coop needs to be easily accessible to water and feeder systems and also when you clean it periodically.
•	Think about your lawn in the area and weeds that may be accessible to your birds.

These are all important elements that you need to know when you know how to make a chicken coop. It can literally take months to plan, design, and draw up a blueprint for how to make a chicken coop. But don’t fret! Luckily for you, I have already done all the hard work and provided you with multiple versions of chicken coop plans that you can use. All you have to do is select the dimensions you want for your chicken coop and the style of the design. I have made sure that the designs are all ergonomically fit and that it’s just plain smart. For example, all the doors are wide enough and easy to get into the chicken coop to clean the coop, add hay, or expand it so you can add more birds.
Small Chicken Coop Plan
A lot of people nowadays are raising “urban chickens” either as pets or for consumption and since the urban residences do not offer a lot of free space, people are building smaller chicken coops as well as making small chicken coop plans. Making small chicken coop plans varies greatly from the wide scale chicken coops in terms of function as well as the overall planning. Nowadays, people are making small chicken coops for the purpose of decoration as well as in order to add appeal to their house environment. Since it has become a fad with some homeowners you will also need to consider this factor. There are new designs which require fewer materials and may allow you to utilize scrap materials. As long as you are not making small chicken coop plans for business, this option is available for you.

First of all, aside from taking into consideration the basic chicken coop plans like the area, location, size, materials, ventilation, flooring and working design, you need to be creative.
Another aspect that you need to consider is its environment. Since small chicken coops are utilized at residences and not on farms, make sure that it will not become hazardous for you or your family when you have one installed nearby. The droppings from the chicken, if not disposed of and managed properly, can be a health hazard, cordon off the area so that your little children will not be able to go near without your supervision. Another factor that needs to be thought about is house pets. House pets, whether they may be dogs, cats or large animals may eat your chickens if they are not protected properly. Make sure that the coop is sturdy enough to withstand any attempts from your other pets to break in. This should be an important aspect in your small chicken coop plan.

Small chicken coop plans can definitely help you in a lot of creative and recreational ways. Be inspired and make one today as your personal hobby. I am sure that it can contribute much to your family’s enjoyment, as well as your houses over all appeal.

Chicken Coop Plans
In many countries all over the globe, people love to raise chicken not only as a means to sustain them, but as a means of getting good old quality, home grown and organically fed chicken. No supermarket, genetically altered chicken could ever beat the rich taste and healthy goodness of a farm raised hen. Many chicken raisers are proud of their own breed and their own quality, taste and recipes. For this reason a lot of people with huge backyard spaces are making their own personal chicken coops. Having your own chicken coop plans make it ten times easier to build.

There are a lot of pre-made chicken coops available in the market today; however, most of these chicken coops are too large, too small or too expensive for your budget. That is why most people prefer building their very own chicken coops. The first step that you need to do is to make your very own chicken coop plans. You can either research about chicken coop plans on the internet or you can start making one on your own, just make sure that you modify your plans accordingly or that you make your own chicken coop plan with your own personal limitations in mind.

How big is your free space and how big do you want your chicken coop to be? In making your chicken coop plans, make sure that you measure your desired height, width and length beforehand. The bigger the space you have in your yard the more work room you can have and the more space you can utilize for your chicken coop. The bigger your chicken coop will also affect the cost of the materials; you need to make sure that you still have the money to buy the chickens and the feed. I suggest that you plan your chicken coop below your budget compromising level, remember if this is your first time making your chicken coop, you might spend a lot on it just to have it gone and unused later.
Make sure that you make your coop in a strategic location, believe me, you don’t want your entire house smelling like chicken. Locate it at little far away from your main establishment. Make sure that the chicken coop you make is made of the right materials and not just any scrap you find. In making your chicken coop plans, consider the chicken’s need for cleanliness, using old and moldy wood can cause infection. Proper ventilation is needed here but keep in mind that you can’t make a chicken coop with windows in it. Angle the flooring slightly lower near the entrance so you can clean and wash the chicken coop with ease.

Making a chicken coop plan is an enjoyable and beneficial activity for the whole family. In a few days time, the whole family can enjoy great food, great bonding and a great experience that they can treasure for a lifetime.

I get tons of emails a day on which are the best plans to build a chicken coop. It’s hard for me to respond to each and every email, so I just made a post on the exact chicken coop design book that I used to build my chicken coop. Before I go into the details of the book, you can check it out here:

When I bought the ebook it was about 30 bucks and it was worth every penny. Let me explain why. A few years ago, I thought it would be fun and exciting to own some chickens to have fresh eggs and be able to teach my son how to raise feed chickens. I had no knowledge in building chicken coops, so I drafted up my own designs, bought some supplies at the hardware store, and ended wasting a lot of time or buying stuff I didn’t need. In short, I went through about 3 different designs and wasted a good amount of money.

I didn’t think about how hard it could be. I first thought it was just a square box to house chickens, right? Wrong, there are so many different elements that I missed such as having proper ventilation, enough lighting, and even positioning the chicken coop at the right spot in my backyard. Plain and simple, I was in over my head about the whole project and wanted to give up. I even thought about buying those pre-built chicken coops, until I looked at the price and knew that it was way too expensive.

I had to swallow my pride and ask a good friend of mine who lived a bit up north. My friend Steve has been raising chicken coops for over 14 years and definitely had the experience with how to build a chicken coop. I can’t believe that he recommended me an ebook called Building a Chicken Coop.

The manual did cost me about 30 bucks, but here is why it was worth every penny to me. I must have wasted about $300 on trying to build a chicken coop on my own without instructions. Boy did I wish I had this manual first. If you don’t believe me, give it a try and contact me to let me know!

I was blown out of the water. I couldn’t believe that the chicken coop book actually had so many different designs for different kinds of backyards, budgets, and even had comprehensive instructions. All you really needed to have in terms of tools is a hammer, an electric drill, and also a saw. I was glad about that part because I didn’t have a woodworking setup in my garage. I’m not easily impressed, so when I went through this book I was quite surprised.

There was one qualm I didn’t like about the build a chicken coop book though. It contained some extra information that wasn’t helpful for me at the time of building the coop. For example, the author tells you how to take care of the chickens and make sure they don’t get sick, and also goes into detail on what kinds of food to feed the chicken. I guess that this may be helpful for some people, but I really just wanted the chicken coop built.

Other than that, the build a chicken coop book is amazing. I highly recommend that you check it out!

It’s important to keep your birds safe and warm so that it protects them from predators and also from diseases that the hens could get. It is a safe haven for your birds to live and eat. I’ll go over the reasons why you should have a hen house and also how to build a hen house.

What You Should Know About How To Build a Hen House
It’s important that your chickens have access to clean water all year around. I would recommend installing an automatic watering system inside the hen house. It’s good to keep the water clean and also if you live in an area with mosquitoes, you do not want to have standing water out for long periods of time.

In your hen house, be sure to have some sort of electricity to brood chicks and also provide enough light to get your hens to lay eggs all year round. Running a simple electricity system inside the hen house is not a difficult task to do. I will explain more about it later in this article or on any of the links in this article.

Along with an automatic watering system, having a automatic feeder will come in handy so they the birds get fed at a regular schedule everyday. Also when you are away on vacation, the chickens will be able to get fed and not starve to death. There are models that are available which hang on the wall and dispense a certain amount of food at a specific time. You can also try additional dispensers for oyster shell or grit. Keep the food storage near the hen house, but make absolutely sure that it is secure and tightly shut in a bin or metal garbage can. You need to insure that the food cannot be accessible by rodents at night or other creatures.

Make sure that the hen house is completely closed with wire as well so that predators do not make off with young chicks that are still growing and have no defense. I would also bury some chicken wire around the perimeter of the hen house so that there is no rodents that dig up from underneath and into the chicken coop.

In the placement of your hen house, take note where the sun is the strongest in your backyard and make sure that the hen house gets some shade so that they are not in direct sunlight all the time. If you are in a windy area, you’ll need a windbreak which will protect the birds from wind and large storms.

You will definitely need a lot of straw to line nest boxes and the straw should be fresh. Also keep a rake and broom nearby to clean up old straw as well.

These are just tips on building you hen house, but I would like to show you diagrams and instructions on how to build a hen house at home. There are very expensive pre-built hen houses that you can buy for thousands of dollars, but it gets to be really expensive. You can scrap all of that and build one for yourself for much less expensive.

I saw these chicken coops that sold for thousands of dollars. I knew that I could build them myself if only I had my hands on chicken coop building plans. All in all, I spent about $200 more or less on building my own chicken coop. And I’ll tell you what, my neighbors all think that I bought it for thousands of dollars. In this article, I’ll show you how I did it and also give you information on chicken feeders, chicken water containers, chicken nest boxes, and chicken roosts. Before I start, be sure to check out the link below:

Chicken Coop Building Plans
There are a plethora of different chicken coop designs and many ways for you to design your coop for your birds. If you have scrap lumber at home and left over house paint, you can build a chicken coop for relatively cheap.

Depending on your needs and how many birds you’ll have, you’ll need to design the coop based on that. If you only need a portable chicken coop, I would suggest a chicken tractor, which will do that exact job. Chicken tractors do not have a floor to them and some people move them from one part of their lawn to another so that their green grass doesn’t get ruined. Having birds will destroy and kind of lawn that you do have. The chicken tractors are used as a temporary thing and their droppings can be used as fertilizer for you lawn.

Chicken Coop Building Plans Materials
The materials you’ll need in your chicken coop is mainly wood, sometimes you can improvise and use other materials such as PVC pipes, barrels, tarps, and shingles. If you check out the link below, I’ll go into detail how you can use these materials. Basically, you’ll need some scrap lumber and nails. If you are handy with your hands and can build things, then this project of building a chicken coop is for you.

When you need to build chicken nest boxes, you’ll need to allow some straw to sit on the bottom so the eggs won’t crack when they lay. Birds are social creatures and will end up sharing the same nest box with other birds. You will not need to build a nest box for each chicken that you have.

Also when building a chicken roost, a 2’ by 4’ board should work fine. As long as it give enough room for your birds . You can also make a chicken feeder and water container with 5-gallon buckets. Some people like to buy the feeders from the store, but it really depends on your needs and how many birds you have in your coop.

There are several chicken coop designs that you can utilize to house your hens and chickens. These chicken coop designs can range from mini, small, medium, large, and chicken coop tractors. You’ll even find nice chicken coop designs like a double-story ark coop. You can easily build these chicken coops yourself without having to spend thousands of dollars on a small hen house. I’ve researched some of these pre-built chicken coops and the mini version that they have starts at well over $1,000. That’s pretty expensive when you can build the chicken coop yourself for literally a fraction of that cost.

If you have an old shed you can possibly use that as a chicken coop design, but it may not be well ventilated or have enough light in it to safely house your hens. It’s important to have a large barn if you have too many predators around your area. One time, I lost 40 birds in week when I tried to free-ranges the chickens. I knew I had to have a chicken coop to house the birds.

You also need to give the birds plenty of space because in case they are breeding, you may need a separate breeding pen. The rooster pens will need extra space so that they don’t end up killing each other. Here is the general rule of thumb when thinking about your chicken coop designs:

Per chicken: allow a minimum of 3-4 square feet in the coop and about 8-10 square feet in run. These are the standards. If you have bantams, it will generally run 2-3 square feet in the coop and 6-8 square feet in the run. Again, if you are breeding, it is best to give them as must space as you can. You can never get too big when it comes to the run.

First you must determine how much space you have when deciding your chicken coop designs. The above standards are rules, but of course if you have more room and more space, you can allocate a bit more, or even have more coops. Especially when you start raising chickens, you will want more chickens to keep them company. Birds are social creatures and they need the company of other chickens in order to not be stressed out.

Note that chickens belong outside unless they are roosting and laying so that is where the chicken coop comes in. Roosting is when the chickens are sleeping at night. Also know that the birds will tear up whatever landscape that they are on. You’ll notice soon that the grass will be all gone and they will be pooping everywhere.

I had a chance to personally meet with Bill Keene before I set out to write this Building a Chicken Coop review. I asked him a few questions as I was set out to build my very first chicken coop.

First of all, I am an amateur chicken farmer and have always considered keeping chickens in my backyard. There is nothing like having fresh chicken eggs in the morning every time the sun rises. I don’t have large acres to build a giant chicken coop so that was why I was first attracted to Building a Chicken Coop. Bill Keene’s advice walked me throughout the way to build the right chicken coop. Before I even spent a penny on the birds, equipment, or feed, Keene told me about every issue I should consider.

Building a Chicken Coop Review

Some of the main points told in the Building a Chicken Coop book to consider is to tell you what kind of species goes with your garden. Also it shows you what to feed them and most importantly, how to build a chicken coop. Because the diagrams and instructions were easy-to-read, it gave a really good head start in my Building a Chicken Coop review. The lists and materials needed were also really helpful and I was even able to used and old recycled materials to save money. It not only made it more environmentally safe and sound, but it was also nice on the pocket book.

The Building a Chicken Coop book is so thorough and detailed it really surprised me. It went from telling you how often you should care for your chicken to be a good poultry keeper, to even what you should expect from the color of the egg and how to tell if the hen is healthy from their feces.

I highly recommend in my Building a Chicken Coop review to try this product out because you can tell Bill Keene put a lot of effort in this book and really cares about your success in building a chicken coop. Just from reading his excerpts alone, you can tell he is a complete expert in the field and does not leave any stone unturned.

Right now I have so many eggs from my eight healthy hens and it is all thanks to Bill Keene and his Building a Chicken Coop book. I give this Building a Chicken Coop review two thumbs up! I highly recommend that you check out Bill Keene’s Building a Chicken Coop book if you want to successfully build a chicken coop, raise chickens and hens, and have a plethora of healthy eggs every morning.

I will show you how to build a chicken coop, but let me give you an introduction to chicken coops. First off, a chicken coop is used as a shelter and safe retreat for chickens and it also give hens a place to lay their eggs in a safe environment. The chicken coop needs to have an area where the chickens can roam around in their outside environment called a run. You should determine whether or not the chickens should be confined in a holding pen that is fully enclosed, free-range, or fenced off. This depends on the natural predators that are around the area and it can be either wild or domestic.

Depending on how many chickens you plan to have, you will need to build a coop based on that size. It can range from small, medium, large, to even chicken tractors. The example I will provide on how to build a chicken coop is for 8 chickens. You should follow these general rules when knowing how to build a chicken coop.

-	You need to allow at least 5 square feet of space for each chicken. This allow them plenty of space for each individual chicken or hen.
-	Generally, if you have about 8 chickens, they can share a total of 3 nests between those eight. Any more chickens, you’ll need more nests.
-	Give at least 9 inches in perch length for each of your chickens. I will explain this further later on.

How to Build a Chicken Coop

It’s important to keep these things in mind when building a chicken coops. The chicken coop needs to provide a bit of storage area and needs an entrance hole, called a chicken hatchway. It’s imperative to have ample lighting and ventilation for the chickens. Also keep in mind that the door to the entrance should be big enough so that you can clean the chicken coop with ease. The door should open inwards and consider putting a lock on it as well. When knowing how to build a chicken coop, you’ll know that the floor has to allow for about inches of wood shavings called deep litter.

When installing a feeder and water system, some people make their own, but you can also just buy a supply system that has it already made.

Keep these 3 main focus points when learning how to build a chicken coop.
1.	It’s important that your chicken coop stays safe from predators and from the weather. You don’t want to lose and chickens, hens, or eggs to something that you can do to protect it.
2.	Make sure that you keep the chicken coop at an easy maintenance level. This way you can keep it clean and take good care of the chickens and hens.
3.	The chicken coop needs to have ventilation but also stay warm. It is a safe haven for the chickens and they also need some light that gets into the coop.
